Autobiography of Ms. Berlin
I can not say that I currently have an abundance of experience working in a school environment. I am scheduled to do my pre-internship next semester. I have done a few classroom visits during the duration of my CTE classes but have yet to have personal experience teaching in one. I have run my own Martial Arts classes while in High School (often for students who were my age or older) and feel confident in my ability to manage any classroom.
I have worked in and out of home childcare since 2002 as a babysitter, nanny, and daycare worker. I primarily worked with younger children in this capacity. As previously stated I also assisted in teaching Martial Arts courses while in High School. I ran classes for students between the ages of 5 and 18. In college I have worked as a Secretary in a Martial Arts school for a year and a half (in which I learned the basics of running a small business) and am currently employed as a direct care staff at Family and Children’s services. I work with children with severe behavioral and emotional disabilities.
I have a wide variety of interests. I am an avid reader and a self proclaimed Jane Austen enthusiast having read all her novels and studied their translation into films. I am an expert in the use of Parliamentary Procedure and have experience revising and rewriting organizational documents. In high school I studied and instructed classes in Kenpo Karate (this included some training in wrestling and boxing). In high school I was also the founding Vice President of the Theater Improv club and planned the first “Comedy for Cancer” event at my school. When I have spare time I enjoy watching Red Wings hockey games and spending time with my friends.

During college I have taken it upon myself to get the most out of my experience and have become very involved on campus. I have volunteered with Drive Safe Kalamazoo (the student safe ride program at WMU), have volunteered with one of our Alternative Winter Break trips, and am a member of three honors societies (Alpha Lambda Delta, Sigma Tau Delta, and Order of Omega). I am a member of the social sorority Alpha Omicron Pi and have served their Alumnae Relations Chair, Panhellenic Representative, Preference Party head, and elections nominating chair. I was a member of the Campus Activities Board and am the founding President of the Fraternal Values Society at WMU. My largest accomplishment at Western is my involvement with the Western Student Association (student government on campus). I was a senator for two years and sat on the allocations commission for the same duration. I am now on WSA’s cabinet as the Allocations Commission Chair and have recently rewritten the funding bylaws and implemented a new funding follow up procedure for events that are student funded.
As a double major in Secondary Education in Business and English I have a very unique personal philosophy of education. I personally believe in enriching CTE programs with academic proficiencies as I feel that it is important to ensure that students are learning in a real world capacity. I intend to work towards abolishing the stigma surrounding CTE courses and show students and their parents the beneficial nature that these classes can have in their lives. Not all students learn best through traditional academic approaches and I feel that approaching academic subjects when paired with real world situations (so teaching how to write a business letter and a grammar lesson together) the information is better learned and more valued. I think it is important to meet academic and CTE standards within all my courses as it is a teachers responsibility to prepare their students fully for success after High School and, in my opinion, there is no better way to ensure that.
